Connections

In OpenVLE, connection configurations define how users can connect to virtual machines or VM templates -- for example via RDP or SSH.
These connections are centrally managed and enable secure, browser-based access through Apache Guacamole.

In the Connections section, you can view existing configurations, create new connections, and assign them to specific users or virtual machines.

Where can I find this section?

Navigation:
Via main menu: Connections
Alternatively accessible via: Linked from Virtual Machines or VM templates

Features at a glance

  • View all existing connections
  • Create new connection templates (e.g. RDP, SSH)
  • Create connections based on connection templates
  • Centrally manage reusable connection templates

Example or use case

Example: Create an RDP connection for a virtual machine

An administrator wants to give users access to a new Windows VM. In the Connections section, she creates a new connection template with the RDP protocol, enters the credentials, and links it to the corresponding VM. She then creates new connections based on this template, assigning them to individual users. These users can now connect directly to the VM via the browser -- securely and without local RDP software.

Notes / special considerations

  • Connections in OpenVLE are centrally managed and are independent of the user account.
  • Connections cannot be edited, only deleted and recreated.
  • Connection templates are used to standardize recurring configurations.
  • Only users with the appropriate permissions can modify connection settings or credentials.
  • Active sessions can be monitored via the Apache Guacamole server.
  • Connection templates and VM templates are two distinct object types, each with its own function and assignment.
